Therapeutic roles of acupuncture in the treatment of chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting
柏灿;魏奕彤;张彩娟; Can BAI;Yi-tong WEI;Cai-juan ZHANG;Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting(CINV) remains one of the most disruptive complications during cancer treatment, often persisting despite standard antiemetic regimens. As clinical practice seeks supplementary strategies to enhance symptom control, acupuncture and moxibustion have emerged as promising adjunctive therapies.Existing trials and meta-analyses indicate their therapeutic potential, yet the neurobiological basis for these effects has not been fully elucidated. This study synthesizes current evidence to outline how acupuncture and moxibustion intervene in the peripheral and central pathways involved in CINV.Particular attention is given to their regulatory influence on vagal afferent signaling, gastrointestinal sensory pathways, and key neurotransmitter systems, such as 5-HT,SP, DA,and GABA,alongside modulation of brainstem nuclei and higher-order neural circuits implicated in emetic responses. The analysis also identifies procedural and methodological constraints in present clinical studies and highlights unresolved mechanistic questions.By integrating findings from neurophysiology and oncology-related symptom research, this review offers a foundation for more precise mechanistic investigations and for optimizing acupuncture-based interventions in CINV management.

Overall reporting quality of acupuncture treatment for cancer-related symptoms and adverse effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy
刘昕艳;王超峰;魏建子;毛慧娟; Xin-yan LIU;Chao-feng WANG;Jian-zi WEI;Hui-juan MAO;Objective:The objective of this study was to systematically evaluate the reporting quality of recent randomized controlled trials(RCTs) investigating the potential of acupuncture for the management of cancerrelated symptoms and chemotherapy-induced adverse effects. Methods:RCTs evaluating acupuncture for cancer-related symptoms and treatment-related adverse effects were retrieved from PubMed through December 31,2024.Data extraction and quality assessment were conducted using Excel spreadsheets, and the analysis was based on the CONSORT,STRICTA,and TIDieRPlacebo international reporting guidelines. Results:In total,129 studies were included,of which 126 were indexed in the Science Citation Index, encompassing 10,798 patients. Most studies were conducted in the United States and China and covered various types of cancer, including breast, colorectal, and head and neck cancer. The most commonly studied symptoms were pain,chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, and vomiting.Although most studies provided sufficient background information and clearly stated their research objectives and hypotheses, notable reporting deficiencies were observed in the randomization process, blinding implementation, sample size calculation, adverse events, acupuncture intervention details(e.g., needle depth and deqi response),adherence to placebo acupuncture, and environmental conditions. Conclusion:This study underscores deficiencies in the reporting quality of RCTs evaluating acupuncture for managing cancer-related symptoms, particularly regarding randomization, blinding, sample size calculations, and intervention details.Future investigations should adhere rigorously to international reporting guidelines, optimize study designs, and promote the standardization of acupuncture therapies to improve the transparency, reliability, and reproducibility of acupuncture RCTs,thereby supporting the evidencebased integration of acupuncture in cancer care.
